Cars and two-wheelers sales zoomed fast in August

Chennai/Kolkata, Sep 1 (IANS) Improved monsoon and new product launches helped the automobile industry improve the sales in August, which are set to get a further boost in the ensuing festival season, industry experts said on Thursday.

"The improved spread of monsoon as well as new product launches have helped the auto industry perform positively. Coupled with this, the uncertainty surrounding diesel vehicles has been lifted by the honourable Supreme Court giving the customer the choice to buy his preferred vehicle which will help improve sentiments going forward," Pravin Shah, President and Chief Executive (Automotive) Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said.

"At Mahindra we are happy to have garnered an overall growth of 14 per cent and a growth of 29 per cent in UVs (utility vehicles) during the last month (August) and we hope that the ensuing festive season will give us a further boost," Shah added.

In August, M&M sold 40,591 vehicles, including passenger and commercial vehicles and three-wheelers.

"The next three months of festive season should see some positive growth in the automotive sector mainly because of the good monsoon, bonanza to government employees under the seventh pay commission and some attractive discounts offered by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) on few models," Abdul Majeed, Partner-Price Waterhouse, was quoted as saying in a statement on sales trend for automobile companies.

"The new compact SUV (sports utility vehicle) models will entice customers to buy these vehicles. First-time customers will prefer petrol version of the vehicles compared to diesel because of the uncertainty around these vehicles in the medium to long term," he added.
