Traffic snarls, triggered by the downpour in the evening, even led to the cavalcade of US Secretary of State John Kerry stuck on the road leading to the city from airport.
Observatories at Palam, Lodhi Road, the Ridge and Ayanagar respectively recorded 8 mm, 20.8 mm, 32.2 mm, and 7.2 mm rain between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m, weather officials said.
According to the weather, heavy downpour broughtdown the maximum temperature of the day to season's normal as it settled at 34.7 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature of the day was recorded at 26.5 degrees. The humidity oscillated between 98 and 70 per cent.
"It will be generally cloudy sky on Tuesday. Thunderstorm with rain likely to occur," an official at the India Meteorological Department told IANS.
The weather office further said that the maximum and minimum temperature on Tuesday would hover around 34 and 26 degrees Celcius respectively.
Though the heavy rains made the weather pleasant, it derailed traffic movement across several stretches in the city. Commuters had a tough time reaching their destinations.
Ankit Upadhyay, area manager in a private firm, told IANS that some of the roads leading to Connaught Place near Janpath and Jantar Mantar were flooded with ankle-deep water.
"I left for Noida from Jantar Mantar.. it took me over an hour to reach Mandi House circle which is barely 3.5 km away and normally it takes only 10 minutes," Upadhyay said, adding it took over two and a half hours to reach Noida from Jantar Mantar.
Many of the commuters shared their frustration of getting stuck in traffic jams on Twitter.
"Pathetic state of Delhi. Stuck in traffic jam from last two hours now. Few minutes of rain and city comes to standstill?" Geetu Moza tweeted.
"It is a nightmerish experience to get stuck in traffic jams. It is irritating," posted Avnish Mishra, a software engineer.
Terrible traffic snarls were seen on roads heading towards Gurgaon, which again came to a standstill, and the airport.
Places hit by massive traffic congestion due to waterlogging include Moti Bagh, Wazirabad near Sahni Motors as well as Chintapurni flyover, the Pragati Maidan, Azad Market railway underpass, Kala Ghat on Ring Road, the stretch between IIT-Delhi and Munirka, Chirag Dilli, Punjabi Bagh, Karol Bagh, Dwarka, Shastri Park, Seelampur, Ghazipur, Najafgarh, the Nangloi-Mundka road, the Dhaula Kuan flyover and Greater Kailash II market.
