Freedom fighter Murmu’s great-grandson waiting for a job

Freedom fighter Murmu's great-grandson waiting for a jobRanchi, Aug 26 (IANS) He can pass off as just another young man in Jharkhand looking for a job. But Mandal Murmu exemplifies the grit and courage with which a young man can achieve his goal, with a little help from a mentor. That's not surprising because Mandal is the great-grandson of legendary tribal revolutionary Sidhu Murmu who led the Santhal rebellion of 1855-56.

Mandal's father Betadhan Murmu died in 2002 and the family was in dire straits. But in 2006, Sudesh Mahto, chief of All-Jharkhand Students' Union, visited the family and decided to do his bit to pull them out of the abyss.

Mahto was impressed by Mandal's desire to pursue higher studies. And so he ensured that the youngster gets admission in the Cambridge School of Tatisilwai. Mandal completed his Class 10 from this school in 2011 and Class 12 in 2013. He then pursued a diploma course in engineering from the Silli Polytechnic College.

This year, Mandal successfully completed the course, making his family and village proud.

On Friday, Mahto once again visited the Murmu family as he had promised earlier. He was elated that Mandal has passed the diploma course with flying colours.

"There were many who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. We will do everything for their families. I just tried to fulfill my responsibility," Mahto told IANS.

Mandal expressed his gratitude for all the help that Mahto has extended.

"It was due to his efforts that I completed the diploma course in engineering. He (Mahto) was the one who got me admitted in the school and was always by my side whenever I needed help," a visibly ebullient Mandal told IANS. "I can never forget what he has done for me," he added.

Mandal now hopes that the state government will take note of his potential and provide him with a job.
