Cash awards pour in for Sindhu

New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) Cash awards have been pouring in for star shuttler P.V. Sindhu, who clinched a silver medal in the women's singles category at the Rio Olympics.

The 21-year-old has received cash prize of more than Rs 13 crore so far, including Rs 5 crore from the Telengana government, Rs 3 crore from the Andhra Pradesh government and Rs2 crore from the Delhi government.

The Hyderabad shuttler also received Rs 50 lakh each from the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the sports ministry and the state governments of Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

Sindhu's employers Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) awarded her Rs 75 lakh, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) gave Rs 30 lakh while the All India Football Federation (AIFF) gifted Rs 5 lakh.

Apart from this, several people have also announced awards in their individual capacity, including Rs 50 lakh from NRI businessman Mukkattu Sebastian and Rs 1.01 lakh from Bollywood star Salman Khan.

The World Championships bronze medalist has also been gifted a couple of BMW cars -- from legendary batsman Sachin Tenduldulkar and the Hyderabad District Badminton Association.
