Agra environmentalists tie rakhi to Yamuna

Agra environmentalists tie rakhi to YamunaAgra, Aug 18 (IANS) Environmentalist tied 'rakhi' to the Yamuna to pledge support and work to save the dying river here on Thursday.

At the Etmauddauala View Point Park, members of the River Connect Campaign tied rakhies on Raksha Bandhan to a pole in the river, symbolising bonding with the river which for the moment flows full and majestically.

Hundreds of lit "diyas" were floated on the river.

Activists said that thousands of people have joined the River Connect movement and are turning up for the daily Yamuna Aarti to express their solidarity.

While Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Deepak Singhal on Thursday directed the district administration to speed up work on rubber check dams on the Yamuna, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Uma Bharti on Wednesday announced in Vrindavan that a steamer/ferry service would soon be a reality on the Yamuna between Agra and Vrindavan.

A new waste treatment plant is being set up in Mathura. The treated water will be used by the Mathura Oil Refinery, thus easing pressure on Agra's fresh water reservoir Keitham, which was built by the British to take care of the water needs of the city during the lean months.
