Women’s help desk set up in Gurgaon police station

Gurgaon, Aug 13 (IANS) The Haryana Police on Saturday setup a women's help desk in Gurgaon's Manesar police station to ensure better safety and security for women, Commissioner of Police Navdeep Singh Virk announced.

The Haryana Police took this special initiative ahead of the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival on August 18.

After inaugurating the dedicated desk, Virk said that the Haryana government was all set to empower safety of women in the state.

Addressing senior police officers, women, company officials and locals present during the inauguration ceremony, Virk said that on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan last year (2015), women police stations were setup in every district of the state.

"Steps being taken by the Haryana government and police department regarding women's security safety, has been appreciated even at international level and a leading national television channel of Europe is making a documentary on it (all women police stations)," said Virk.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Deepak Saharan has been appointed nodal officer for the desk.

On the occasion, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sadar) Dharna Yadav said that a woman Sub-Inspector and two lady constables will be available on the desk from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

Dharna Yadav said that officers on the duty on the help desk will tell victims about their rights and provide them all legal help within the law immediately.

"This desk will be helpful for women, specially belonging to rural areas and weaker section of the society," she said.

In order to ensure safety for women commuters, the police in January 2013 had also set up women help desk in all five Metro stations in Gurgaon.
