Chit funds rob crores in Tripura, government silent: Trinamool

Agartala, Aug 11 (IANS) Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday alleged that unauthorised Non-banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and chit fund organisations have robbed thousands of crores of rupees from over 14 lakh depositors in Tripura while the Left Front government has remained silent.

"According to government information, Rs 1,172 crore was taken away by the illegal NBFCs and chit fund organisations. But the actual amount would be several times more," Trinamool Congress Leader Sudip Roy Barman told reporters here.

He said: "Over 14 lakh depositors' hard earned money looted by the illegal NBFCs and chit fund organisations but the Left Front government did nothing and remained silent spectators."

Barman, who recently led a split in Congress legislators' group and six of the ten Congress MLAs joined TMC, said that during the regime of the Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Front government, the activities of the illegitimate NBFCs and chit fund groups have mushroomed in Tripura.

Refuting the TMC's charges, the CPI-M leaders said that only Tripura's Left Front government has taken steps to protect the interests of depositors and investors.

CPI-M State Secretary Bijan Dhar said the Left Front government in Tripura is the first state government in India that has enacted law to deal with the illegal chit fund and NBFC companies and has asked the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to probe the cases of illegal collections of money from thousands of people by them.

Barman said that during the regime of the Left Front government, public money has been looted indiscriminately by some unscrupulous people and the state government led by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar remained unmoved.

Distributing an order of the state Lokayukta among the media persons, Barman said that the Lokayukta last month has ordered to initiate a criminal case against state principal Chief Conservator of Forest and two other forest officials for their involvement in a Rs 10.52 crore jetropha cultivation scam, but the state government did nothing yet.

Citing official statistics, the TMC leader has said that the Left Front government has been a failure in education, health, drinking water supply, agriculture, providing homes to homeless families.
