Cambodian PM sets 2018 for national electionPhnom Penh, Aug 8 (IANS) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on Monday that the country's next election would be held on July 29, 2018.

"In respect to the Constitution that stated that the term of National Assembly is five years and the National Assembly shall not be dissolved before the end of its term except when the government is twice deposed within a period of twelve months, I'm ready to declare July 29, 2018 as the election date," he said in a televised speech.

The Southeast Asian country holds a national election every five years, Xinhua news agency reported.

 

In the last election held on July 28, 2013, the prime minister's ruling Cambodian People's Party won 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party in the 123-seat National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the prime minister called on people to register for the upcoming votes, which include the commune election on June 4, 2017 and the 2018 national election.
