Heavy rain in Himachal, more expected


Shimla, Aug 6 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh on Saturday continued to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, causing landslides and blockages on highways in some areas, while all the major rivers and their tributaries were in spate, officials of the local Met office said.

Incessant rains have caused massive landslides on National Highways 21 and 22 in Shimla, Kinnaur, Mandi and Kullu districts, hampering vehicular traffic.

An official said there are chances of heavy rainfall at some places in the state till Wednesday.

While Kangra town recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 166 mm, Jogindernagar experienced 158 mm, Sujanpur Thira and Dharamshala recorded 155mm and 99mm respectively.

State capital Shimla, which saw 40.5 mm rain, recorded a low of 15.8 degrees Celsius.

Till Monday there are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places in Kangra, Shimla, Hamirpur, Mandi and Solan districts, an official said.

The water level in the major rivers of the state - the Satluj, Beas and Yamuna - which enter the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana has also increased, a government official said.
