Plane overshoots runway, crashes onto busy road

Rome, Aug 5 (IANS/AKI) A cargo plane skidded off an airport runway in northern Italy on Friday, crashed through a perimeter fence and ended up wedged across a busy road after landing in bad weather.

No one was reported to have been hurt in the 4 a.m. crash at Orio al Serio airport near Bergamo, with the crew escaping unharmed.

Witnesses posted dramatic images of the incident to social media.

The 737-400 aircraft belonging to international courier firm DHL had taken off from Paris Charles De Gaulle airport.

Orio al Serio airport was closed for several hours after the crash and some flights were rescheduled and re-routed through Milan's Malpensa airport.

A massive crane was deployed to remove the plane from the road, which remained closed to traffic.
