Nepal to compensate families of those killed in Tarai protestKathmandu, Aug 5 (IANS) The new government in Nepal on Friday decided to provide Rs 1 million each to the families of those killed in Terai protest over the new Constitution.

A Cabinet meeting on Friday led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda took a decision to this effect.

The government decided to release the compensation amount in keeping with the agreement reached with the agitating Madhes-based political parties on Wednesday.

The Madhesi parties and the ruling alliance of Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) reached a three-point agreement on the sensitive issue ahead of the Prime Minister's election.

During the nine-month long protest since September last year, 59 persons were killed and dozens injured.

The government has decided to provide all necessary medical treatment to those who were injured. It has already provided financial assistance for their treatment.

Under the agreement, the government will declare as martyrs those who were killed during the Madhesi protests.

A judicial commission will be formed to probe the alleged atrocities of the state agencies during the Terai protest. The cabinet has instructed the home ministry to initiate the process.

Prominent Madhesi leader Uprendra Yadav welcomed the government's decision.

Meanwhile, the government has also decided to withdraw the proposal that had named 14 ambassadors, Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said. The proposal was forwarded by the previous K.P.Sharma Oli government.
