Flood situation has improved in Assam: Officials

Guwahati, Aug 3 (IANS) The flood situation in Assam has improved even though over 7.69 lakh people still are affected by heavy rains in 14 districts of the state, Assam State Disaster Management Authority officials said on Wednesday.

The flood waters have started receding in many places and inmates of the relief camps begun returning to their homes, they said.

The number of relief camps set up to temporarily house the displaced persons have come down to 109, where nearly 23,000 people are currently sheltered.

The floods affected at least 22 districts with population totalling over 36 lakh.

Over 30 people have died due to floods in Assam this year, according to government statistics.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited flood-hit Nagaon, Morigaon and Kaziranga National Park in Assam on July 29 and assured of all possible help to the state government.
