Tamil Nandy assembly wants high court named after stateChennai, Aug 1 (IANS) Tamil Nadu on Monday unanimously urged the central government to rename the Madras High Court as High Court of Tamil Nadu and not as High Court of Chennai.

A resolution to this effect moved by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the assembly was unanimously adopted.

Moving the resolution, Jayalalithaa said the central government on July 19 placed in the Lok Sabha the High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016, to change the names of Bombay, Kolkata and Madras High Courts.

 

She said from the appointed day the High Court of Madras would be renamed as High Court of Chennai.

Jayalalithaa said the high court is not only for Chennai but for whole of Tamil Nadu. Further as a bench of the high court is functioning in Madurai it would not be appropriate to rename it as High Court of Chennai.

She said high courts of many states are named by their respective state names it will be appropriate to rename the Madras High Court as Tamil Nadu High Court.

The resolution called upon the central government to move necessary amendments to the bill introduced in the Lok Sabha so as to change the name of the High Court of Madras as the High Court of Tamil Nadu.

Later, Jayalalithaa sent the text of the resolution passed by the assembly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to take necessary action.
