Assam MP Gogoi raises flood situation issue in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) The opposition Congress on Monday raised the issue of flood situation in eastern and northeastern India and said the casualty figures have gone up to 90, including 45 of them in Assam.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress member Gaurav Gogoi said in the Lok Sabha that the situation has turned serious in states like Bihar also.

"What has happened in eastern and northeastern India is very serious," he said. The casualty figures has gone up to 45 in Assam, said the MP from Kaliabor.

"Around eight lakh people have been affected. Flood has hit people in Maharashtra and the National Capital Region (NCR) also," he said, adding that the central government was apathetic towards the people's problems.

According to reports from Assam, areas affected by this year's flood spread across districts like Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Nagaon and Karbi Anglong.

Morigaon is the worst affected with nearly 3.5 lakh people hit, reports said.
