New Delhi, July 31 (IANS) US-born R&B singer-songwriter and model Amrit Dasu, whose latest single "Frenemies" has garnered over 400,000 views on YouTube, says most music coming out nowadays is lyrically very personal.
Citing the example of Canadian actor-singer Drake, Dasu said the artiste "really inspired that change in the industry of writing without sugar-coating it".
"It is nice to see artistes not being scared of what people might think and be real with everyone because that's what art is. You have to be totally honest and real now because your audience will see right through the fake," Dasu told IANS in an email interview.
Although electronic dance music (EDM) has gained massive popularity in India nowadays, Dasu believes that R&B will still enjoy fame.
"I'm a big fan of the EDM/pop sound at the moment. Everything changes with time, but one thing I've noticed is that India will never get tired of beautiful, melodic love songs. Those R&B songs are still remembered till this day," he said.
With the advent of social media, artistes like Dasu have had a much bigger impact on the masses with the improved reach. He says that "social media has forever changed the industry".
"I can listen to someone put up a video in a small village in India and watch them all the way here in New York, and by the time I wake up it has the possibility to go viral. Social media is very unpredictable but it has connected the world in some sense," Dasu added.
Last year, Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat featured in the music video of Dasu and Rishi Rich's song "Dil kya kare (Did I love you?)".
However, Dasu himself is not focussing on building a career in Bollywood right now.
"Honestly I'm so focussed on getting my sound right at the moment that I don't really think about it. Maybe one day. Maybe not. It's not something that I have set out to achieve. I do enjoy Bollywood love songs though," he asserted.
