Kolkata teen’s death: Police rule out foul play

Kolkata, July 28 (IANS) Ruling out any foul play and conspiracy, Kolkata police on Thursday attributed "accident" as the reason for the mysterious death of a teenager in the apartment complex of well-known writer Amit Chauduri.

Aabesh Dasgupta, 17, was found lying in a pool of blood in the ground floor car park of Chaudhri's apartment complex in south Kolkata's Ballygunge, where he had gone to attend a birthday party on July 23.

A blood-soaked neck of a broken bottle was recovered from the spot.

"Going through the CCTV footages and examining the circumstantial evidences, there appears no foul play or conspiracy involved. The visceral examination reports are still awaited, but investigation so far reveals the death to be accidental," Joint Commissioner of Police Vishal Garg said.

Garg, however, added that the investigation was still on and the findings still not conclusive.

Aabesh's autopsy report has failed to prove conclusively whether it was a murder or accident. However, the investigators have found evidence indicating the minor had consumed liquor.

The police on Wednesday arrested three people for selling liquor to minors.

The police have registered a murder case based on the complaint by the Dasgupta family.

The investigators on the day also questioned several of the teenagers present at the party.

Rejecting the accident angle, Aabesh's friends, family members and neighbours have started a campaign demanding justice.

Besides creating a Facebook page "Justice for Aabesh", an online petition has been made urging West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to "ensure the investigation is fair and transparent".
