Hemant Soren moves privilege motion against police officer

Ranchi, July 28 (IANS) Jharkhand's Leader of Opposition Hemant Soren on Thursday moved a privilege motion in the assembly against police officer Anurag Gupta for making remarks that were allegedly offensive to the tribal community.

"I have submitted a privilege motion to secretary of the assembly against ADGP Anurag Gupta. I had filed complaint against him in SC and ST police station but no action was taken," Soren, who is Executive President of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), told reporters.

"The issue was also brought to the notice of the government, but nothing happened," he said.

Soren on Sunday lodged a complaint against Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Gupta at a police station, but the complaint has not been converted into an FIR. The complaint is based on an audio CD containing a conversation between Gupta and Congress leader Yogendra Sao.

The ADGP had allegedly called on Sao before the Rajya Sabha polls from the state held in June this year and tried to influence him to ensure that Congress legislator Niramla Devi votes in favour of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Niramla Devi is Sao's wife. The BJP government led by Chief Minister Raghubar Das had also slapped Sao with Crime Control Act (CCA) which was revoked by the Jharkhand High Court.

"Hemant Soren sent you to jail. They are tribal people and they will never support you," is what Gupta purportedly told Sao in the recorded conversation.

Soren said Gupta's words caused offence to the tribal community.
