IIM-Shillong students plant saplings to pay tribute to KalamShillong, July 26 (IANS) Over 200 students of the Indian Institute of Management- Shillong on Tuesday participated in plantation drive 'Prakriti' to pay tributes to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the eve of his first death anniversary.

They planted saplings of various species in and around the mountainous state capital of Meghalaya.

"Kalam's legacy is to make the planet more liveable, not only for the present, but for the future generations as well. We will also name an auditorium on our new campus at Umsawli after Kalam apart from installing a life-size statue of his outside the new auditorium," IIM-Shillong Director Amitabha De said.

 

An IIM faculty Basav Roychoudhury said: "The plantation drive is our small initiative to make the planet more liveable and focusing on aspects related to the environment as well as human life."

Kalam had collapsed while delivering a lecture to the management students of the IIM-Shillong here on July 27 last year. He was rushed to the Bethany hospital, where he was declared dead due to a massive cardiac arrest.

The institute will launch the Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Lecture Series, a platform where eminent personalities from different spheres will share their experiences.

The first lecture will be delivered at the commemoration event by Dr Manas K. Mandal, Director General of Life Sciences, Defence Research and Development Organization.
