NHRC notice to UP over deaths caused by spurious liquor

New Delhi, July 19 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of more than 26 persons who had consumed spurious liquor in two districts of the state.

Taking cognisance of media reports, the commission expressed concern over the issue and demanded a report on the action taken by the administration.

"The commission has observed that the reported suspensions of some public servants in the matter point towards negligence on the part of the official machinery, which resulted in the tragedy. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh calling reports in the matter. They have been given four weeks to respond," said a statement from the commission.

More than 26 persons have died and several others are critical after consuming spurious liquor in Etah and Farukhabad districts. According to media reports, five government employees -- including three from the state excise department -- have been suspended following the incident.
