Malaysia, Singapore ink deal on high-speed rail linkageKuala Lumpur, July 19 (IANS) Malaysia and Singapore on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) over a much anticipated high-speed rail linkage between the two neighbours.

A significant milestone since the project was first announced in 2013, the signing was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, Xinhua news agency reported.

The signing of the MoU will be followed by detailed negotiations and a formal bilateral agreement and is expected to be signed by the end of the year, officials said.

Najib on his blog on Monday wrote that the high-speed rail will enhance people-to-people ties and improve business linkages between the two neighbouring countries.

The proposed high-speed rail is expected to cut the travelling time between the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur and the city state to 90 minutes.
