‘No helmets, no student access’ in Kolkata schools soon

'No helmets, no student access' in Kolkata schools soonKolkata, July 18 (IANS) Schools affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) in the eastern metropolis will soon restrict access to students who commute on their parents' two-wheelers without helmets, an official said here on Monday.

"We will gradually restrict access to students who ride pillion without helmets to check accidents and improve safety of students. We are communicating it verbally now. A circular will be issued across all the schools soon," said Nabarun De, Secretary of Association of Schools for the Indian School Certificate, West Bengal Chapter.

"This awareness must percolate among the parents as well as children and they should also keep these points in mind and ask parents to provide them with helmets. We will ensure children do not ride pillion without helmets," said De, also the Principal of the Central Modern School.

The school on July 15 issued a circular on the helmet rule.

"Those children who travel to and from school in their parents' two wheelers must wear helmets of their size only," the circular said.

The step comes close on the heels of the Kolkata police imposing a "no helmet no petrol" rule forbidding petrol pumps from selling fuel to motorcyclists without helmets.
