Nenand Kresoja's body was spotted by his relatives from room number 106 of Aura hotel in south Delhi's Mahipalpur around 2.30 a.m.
Investigators said that Kresoja checked in the three-star hotel on Thursday around 5.30 p.m. and was seen last time around 8.30 a.m. on Friday when he came out of his room to have breakfast.
"Prima facie evidences suggest that Kresoja committed suicide by slitting the upper part of his elbow with a broken window glass which were found in the room. The body has been sent to conduct post-mortem as per the procedure," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh told IANS.
Singh said it was undoubtedly a self-inflicted injury made by Kresoja as he was alone in the room. "He was lying in a pool of blood when his relatives entered his room by using a specific card to open any room in luxurious hotels."
"Kresoja's relatives (residing in Delhi) visited the hotel later on Friday night on request of his family which sensed something bad as he was not responding to their repeated calls," the officer said.
Kresoja's relatives opened his room when he did respond to their repeated tap on the door. They later informed Police Control Room (PCR) about the incident, the officer said.
"Just after we got the information, the room was sealed and a CFSL (Central Forensic Science Laboratory) team was called to pick up the evidence as it was a case of a foreign national," Singh said.
Croatian Ambassador Petar Ljubicic also visited the scene, he said.
The officer said that Kresoja, who worked in a school in Croatia, came to India on tourist visa after visiting China and Nepal. "We are yet to ascertain the reason behind his suicide attempt as no any suicide note was recovered from the spot."
