Kolkata, July 15 (IANS) The Chinese consulate here has invited a delegation from West Bengal to showcase a bouquet of films from the regional film industry (Tollywood) in the neighbouring country in an effort to strengthen cultural ties and increase movie imports, a diplomat said here on Friday.
"We are finalising plans with officials from the Bengal government to bring a delegation of around 10 people including experts on cinema, actors and actresses to showcase at least three movies from Tollywood," Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Ma Zhanwu told the media here.
He said the focus would be on screening movies that were produced in the last three to four years.
"China imports as many as 50 foreign films every year of which 20 are from the US. We are interested in more films from India, including from Tollywood. We hope the first meeting will be success to improve ties," said Ma.
The visit is expected ahead of the 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) this November, according to consul Li Suyun.
KIFF director Yadab Mandal will be a part of the delegation, said Li.
In the wake of enhanced cultural ties, the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata is organising a maiden film festival in collaboration with the state government beginning July 17.
"As many as seven of the best Chinese films will be shown including two with Indian elements," said Ma.
The films will be screened at the state-run Nandan Film Centre till July 20.
