Visitors register at residence of then CBI chief genuine, SC told

New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) The Supreme Court-appointed committee on Tuesday said that the visitors entry register at the official residence of then CBI chief Ranjit Sinha was genuine and prima facie his meeting with coal block allocation scam accused influenced outcome of the investigation in some cases.

Reserving their order on further steps to be taken on the report by the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) former Special Director M.L. Sharma, a bench of Justice Madan B.Lokur, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice A.K. Sikri said that they may give the copy of the report to all the parties for their comments.

However, counsel for petitioner, NGO Common Cause Prashant Bhushan, urged the court to direct the registration of the FIR and set up a SIT to investigate the matter. He did not favour asking the CBI to investigate the matter as it would relate to the matters investigated by it.

At the outset of the hearing, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the bench that the "report does make some derogatory remarks about former CBI Chief (Ranjit Sinha)".

According to the report, the register was genuine and some people met him 50-60 times.
