Four Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur (Chhattisgarh), July 11 (IANS) Two senior Maoist commanders were among four ultras killed in a gunfight with police in this Chhattisgarh district, officials said on Monday.

All the four bodies were recovered by police who identified two of the dead as members of a Local Guerrilla Squad (LGS) and a squad commander.

Inspector General of Police, Bastar, S.R.P. Kalluri and Bijapur Superintendent of Police K.L. Dhruv said a police team led by Bijapur Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg was sent late Sunday night on patrol and were near Tumnar village when Maoists hiding in the jungle tried to ambush them.

The police team retaliated effectively and after a hour-long exchange of fire, the rebels fled the spot taking cover of the deep jungle and hilly terrain.

The officials said that while continuous rain and water-logging prevented the police party from searching the area properly, an initial search led to the discovery of the bodies of the four killed Maoists, all wearing uniforms. They were identified as LGS commander Gangalur, Second Company Section Commander Raju, Yukesh while the fourth was not recognised.

Police also recovered a 9mm pistol, banners and posters, ammunition, medicines, detonators and other material from the spot.
