CPI-M to hold plenum to chalk out Bengal strategy

Kolkata, July 11 (IANS) Aimed at adopting a party line and strengthening the organisation in West Bengal, the CPI-M will organise a state plenum between September 30 to October 2.

The decision to hold the plenum was taken during a state committee meeting of the party on Sunday in the presence of party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, politburo members Prakash Karat, Manik Sarkar and M.A. Baby among others.

At the meeting Yechury harped on the need to forge the broadest possible resistance to fight the "terror tactics" of the ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal and restore democracy in the state.

While the Central Committee -- the CPI-M's highest decision-making body -- had disapproved the understanding with the Congress in Bengal, the state unit strongly pitched for continuing the "adjustment" with the traditional rival to take on the might of the Trinamool.

Following the rout of the Congress-CPI-M alliance at the hands of the Trinamool in the Assembly polls, the Central Committee had held that the arrangement was "not in consonance" with the political-tactical line of the party and should be rectified.

During the meeting, Yechury also called for intensifying the movement by the Left, secular and associate parties over issues concerning the common people.
