Nepal set to get first woman Chief Justice

Kathmandu, July 10 (IANS) After getting its first woman President and first woman Parliament Speaker in 2015, Nepal is all set to get its first woman Chief Justice with Justice Sushila Karki expected to take formal charge at the Supreme Court of Nepal next week.

A meeting of Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) on Sunday unanimously endorsed Chief Justice-nominee Karki for the vacant position of Chief Justice at the country's apex court, making her the first woman to lead the judiciary in this Himalayan nation.

She has been officiating as acting Chief Justice for three months. The Constitutional Council, headed by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, had forwarded her name as next Chief Justice on April 10.

Ahead of her approval, she had furnished her reply against six complaints registered against her at the committee.

While furnishing her reply, she committed that she will try her best to clean up the judiciary, keep it out from corruption and do her best to give steadfast justice.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will announce Karki's appointment to the post and deliver the oaths of office and secrecy.

Karki said Nepal's judiciary is facing a chronic shortage of judges and asked parliamentarians to speed up the hearing process of remaining 11 Justices whose names were forwarded for appointment by the Judicial Council.
