Panaji, July 9 (IANS) Constant criticism on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp will be regarded as "mini-crimes" in the future because it is used to mock top functionaries like a Chief Minister, Defence Minister and even the Prime Minister, Goa Art and Culture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar said on Saturday.
"Today you get all information ready-made on this small instrument called a mobile. WhatsApp, Facebook and social media will be used for mini-crimes in the days to come. Why I am calling it a mini-crime is because the manner in which social media is used to mock our Chief Minister, despite all the good work he has been doing," Mandrekar said while speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a library in Panaji.
"Facebook posts even attack the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister," Mandrekar said, adding that the irreverence on social media could be linked to the lack of reading.
"Our true culture is destroyed. The coming generation is not showing an improvement, but it's going in reverse. This is taking us towards destruction. We have left behind the true values," Mandrekar said.
"People of older generations were smarter because they used to read," he added.
