Ranchi, July 8 (IANS) A total of 44 persons were on Friday arrested in a special drive launched by the state Excise and Prohibition Department for illegally manufaturing liquor in Jharkhand, an official said.
"Statewide raids were conducted by the Excise and Prohibition Department against the traders and other people involved in making country-liquor and IMFL illegally in the state. A total of 83 cases were lodged and 44 people were arrested," said a department statement.
According to the statement, eight people managed to escape. During raids, 141.91 litres of IMFL, 162 litres of beer and 6,080 kg of mahua besides a large quantity of hooch were seized in the state. The highest number of people were arrested in Bokaro (15) followed by Ranchi where eight people came in the police net.
On July 5, a special drive was launched in which a total 53 people involved in illegal trade and illegally making country and Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were arrested and 74 cases were registered.
IMFL refers to western-style hard liquors such as whisky, rum, vodka, etc, which are manufactured in India.
