Manipur Police solve HDFC bank heist, arrest three

Imphal July 6 (IANS) Three of the six persons who looted the HDFC Bank in Thoubal district on Monday have been arrested, and Rs 8.55 lakh in cash and 2 kg of gold ornaments recovered from them, Manipur Police said on Wednesday.

Police sources told IANS that the identity and particulars of the remaining accused persons would be made known shortly.

Police said: "On Monday, six persons brandishing knives raided the bank and first overpowered two bank guards and then herded them in a room along with other bank employees. The bank is located along the highway at Thoubal Athokpam. They fled with cash and gold ornaments. We are interrogating the arrested persons and it is too early to say whether any insider was involved."

HDFC Bank branch manager T. Dion Maram, who lodged a formal complaint in this regard, said: "Rs 1 crore in cash and gold ornaments valued at Rs 2.50 crore were taken away."

Police swung into action and arrested two looters within 24 hours and recovered 1.5 kg of gold and Rs 7.49 lakh in cash from their possession.

Police said: "We arrested another looter on Wednesday and recovered 700 gram of gold and Rs 100,000 in cash hidden in a pond. The remaining three accused persons are still hiding in some mountain villages."
