Sea erosion increases in monsoon-hit coastal Karnataka

Bengaluru, July 5 (IANS) Heavy monsoon rains have intensified sea erosion in coastal Karnataka with strong surface winds and Arabian Sea water pounding the long west coast, the Met Office said on Tuesday.

"Sea erosion has intensified at Malpe, Udyavara, Padukere and Ucchila along the coastline, as sea water surged towards the shore on strong waves and gusty winds during the last 24 hours," a Met office official told IANS here.

With forecast of heavy rains and gusty winds in most places of the coastal region, the Meteorological Office has advised the local fishermen against venturing out into the sea over the next 24 hours or until weather conditions improve.

"As the south-west monsoon remains active, moderate to heavy rains will occur in most places in coastal districts and many places over south interior and central parts (Malnad) of the state," the official said.

Agumbe in Dakshina Kannada district received 14cm of rainfall on Monday, followed by 13cm at Belthangadi and 12cm at Dharmasthala in the same district, 11cm at Gerusoppa in Uttara Kannada and 10cm Mani in Dakshina Kannada district.

Light to moderate rains will occur at many places in north interior parts of the state while one or two spells of rain or thundershowers are likely in and around Bengaluru, with cloudy sky.
