India Inc gives Rs 1.9 crore to railways for Latur water trains

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) The Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has awarded Rs 1.90 crore to the Central Railway for its unique initiative of providing drinking water through Jaldoot, or water trains, to the thirsting population of Maharashtra's Latur last April-May.

The BCCI members responded to a request to support the novel project of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to deploy Jaldoot for mitigating the sufferings of the half a million people in Latur.

The amount represents approximately 25 percent of the cost of transporting the drinking water from April-June this year, a CR spokesperson said.

The BCCI appealed to its members to extend support and contribute towards the Indian Railway initiative and around 46 including some employees donated to the cause, said BCCI President P. R. Ramesh.

The contribution enabled 16 Jaldoot services of 50 wagons each to provide drinking water to the parched Latur, the CR said.
