Madrid, July 4 (IANS) Vicente del Bosque will not be continuing as Spain's chief coach, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RSFF) announced on Monday.
In a meeting with RSFF president Angel Maria Villar, the veteran coach "expressed his wishes to not to continue at the front of the national team", said the statement, according to Efe.
It added that Villar considers del Bosque "an icon of Spanish football" and offered him the chance to continue working in the RSFF and he "answered affirmatively".
The 65-year-old coach did not want to announce his retirement after the team was eliminated from the UEFA Euro 2016 competition, and wanting to speak with Villar first.
The Real Madrid legend coached Spain to 2010 World Cup and 2012 Euro titles in a glorious eight-year run.
Del Bosque has led the Spanish team through 114 matches, with 87 victories, ten draws, and 17 losses.
His contract was supposed to end on July 31.
