Agartala, July 1 (IANS) Agartala Municipal Corporation has decided to demolish the Trinamool Congress headquarters building here as it was "illegally constructed", Mayor Prafulla Jit Sinha has said.
"The building, where Trinamool headquarter has been set up, was constructed illegally at a children's park violating the civic rules. We have ordered demolition of the building," Sinha told reporters here on Thursday night.
"Several notices were served earlier to stop construction of the building. Trinamool leader Ashish Saha and others were asked to explain their position. In a letter Saha had informed that they were just renovating the building which was damaged due to earthquake," the Mayor added.
But Saha's claim was incorrect as there was no report of earthquake-related damage of any building in the area, Sinha said.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Vice President Mukul Roy, who had inaugurated the party headquarters on Thursday, said the building would remain at the present site.
"The Communist Party of India-Marxist is afraid of the Trinamool Congress which is now the main opposition force in Tripura," Roy told reporters before leaving for Kolkata.
Trinamool state unit chairman Ratan Chakraborty and party leader Sudip Roy Barman had also said the party would not give up the building and were ready to protect it.
