Ghaziabad, June 30 (IANS) An open-air gymnasium being built in the main central park in this Delhi's suburban city in Uttar Pradesh is illegal and must stop immediately, an environmentalist has written to the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA).
In a memorandum to GDA Vice Chairman Vijay Yadav, Akash Vashishtha said such a construction in public parks violates Sections 6 and 8 of the Uttar Pradesh Parks, Playgrounds and Open Spaces (Preservation and Regulation) Act, 1975.
The construction of gymnasium in the central park, which local residents use for their walks and yoga exercises, also violates Section 13 of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973, government orders, and orders of the Supreme Court, high courts and the National Green Tribunal, Vashishtha said.
He pointed out in his memorandum that the GDA has already spent crores of rupees of public funds on horticulture in the park which is located in Raj Nagar area.
Vashishtha said he would be forced to file a contempt case against the GDA if it did not get the construction halted.
Asked about the complaint, Horticulture Officer of the GDA S.P. Sisodia said: "We are investing in public use. If any controversy arises, we would be ready to shift the venue to an appropriate place."
