Singareni to supply coal to Karnataka power plants story for biz news:

Bengaluru, June 30 (IANS) State-run Singareni Collieries Company Ltd in Telangana will supply 70 lakh tonnes of coal per annum to two thermal power plants in Karnataka, an official said on Thursday.

"Singareni has signed an agreement with the state-run Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd for supplying coal to the Bellary thermal power station and the new Yeramaras thermal power station," the official told IANS here.

Singareni Chairman N. Sridhar and KPCL Managing Director G. Kumar Naik signed the agreement in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar here.

As Karnataka has no coal reserves, it purchases coal from Western Coal Fields near Nagpur, Mahanadi Coal Fields near Sambalpur (Odisha) and Singareni for its thermal plants in Ballari and Raichur districts of the state's northern region.

"Coal linkages will enable us to commission the 700 MW third unit of Bellary thermal station and two 800 MW units of the upcoming Yeramaras thermal station near Raichur," the official said.

Though the state generates about 60 per cent of energy from hydel resources in the coastal and central (Malnad) regions, six units of the Raichur thermal power station and two units of Bellary thermal power station generate 2,720 MW from coal.

As hydel power stations are monsoon dependent, the state is building two more coal-based thermal stations of 1,600 MW each at Kalaburgi in north Karnataka and Chattisgarh.
