Shahabuddin's AIIMS visit for treatment inconveniences others

New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin was on Thursday brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here for medical treatment, putting many visitors and patients to inconvenience in the process.

Brought to the hospital around 12 noon for treatment of his back problem, the former parliamentarian from Siwan in Bihar could not be lodged due to non-availability of any VIP room, a hospital source said.

"Security guards and police personnel escorting him created a lot of problems for other people visiting the hospital," the source said on condition of anonymity.

At the time of filing of this report late Thursday evening, the former MP who has spent about 10 years in jail was putting up outside the Emergency Ward along with his security detail.

The source said Shahabuddin was kept at the old private ward in the main building complex initially.

"However, the medical board under the supervision of a neurosurgeon examined Shahabuddin and found there was no immediate need for him to be kept at the old private ward. There was also no vacant VIP room, because of which no room was available to house him," the source said.

Shahabuddin later urged doctors to shift him to the casualty ward, but was told that it could not be done.

The former MP has been brought to AIIMS from Bhagalpur jail in Bihar, where he has been lodged of late. After he complained of back pain, he was permitted to undergo treatment at the AIIMS.
