Indians spent most on vehicles among consumer durables: NSSO

New Delhi, June 29 (IANS) Spending on "transport equipment", or vehicles, constituted the highest share of Indian households' expenditure on consumer durables both in rural and urban areas in 2014-15, according to the latest data released by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) on Wednesday.

"In rural areas, the share of budget spent on a particular durable group with reference to total expenditure on durables is highest for transport equipment (about 83 per cent), when the purchase was done mainly for using it for enterprise purpose," as per the household expenditure on services and durable goods derived from the 72nd round of the National Sample Survey (July 2014-June 2015) released by the Statistics and Programme Implementation Ministry.

"In the urban area, almost similar pattern was observed," the ministry release added.

 

The figure regarding vehicles was 44.71 per cent for rural domestic households, 76.13 per cent for urban enterprises and 45.72 per cent for rural enterprises.

Expenditure on jewellery and ornaments was the second highest expenditure category after vehicles among domestic households in both rural and urban areas,

Domestic rural households spent more than 23 per cent of the household budget on durable goods like jewellery and ornaments, it was 18 per cent in domestic urban households.

The other main spending items of Indian households across urban and rural areas were on heating, cooling, electricity generation and on information technology and communication devices.
