Heavy, widespread rains to lash coastal Karnataka

Bengaluru, June 28 (IANS) As the southwest monsoon remains active in Karnataka, heavy and widespread rains will batter the coastal region of the state over the next 24 hours, a Met official said on Tuesday afternoon.

"The forecast is that rains will be heavy and widespread across the west coast, the Western Ghats in the Malnad region and south interior areas of the state," the Met official told IANS here.

In the rest of the state, including northern and southern districts, rains are likely to be moderate and heavy in isolated places.

"In and around Bengaluru, the sky will be overcast with a few spells of light to moderate rains and thundershowers," the official said.

A vigorous monsoon brought heavy rains in coastal areas and south interior parts of the state during the last 24 hours with Gerusoppa in Uttara Kannada district recording 12cm, followed by Shirali and Manki 11cm each, Honnavar 10cm, and Kundapur, Siddapura, Kumta and Karwar along the coast 9cm each.

Copious rains also lashed Shivamogga district, inundating low-laying areas in many towns and villages in the Malnad region, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday.

In Bengaluru, two persons were killed and another injured in separate rain-related incidents.

Fairoz Pasha, a food contractor, died after a tree fell on him while he rode a motorcycle in the city's western suburb. A driver was also severely injured when the tree trunk crashed on his car.

A four-year-old boy, Jeevan, died when a tree fell on him in a playground due to gusty wind and rain in the city's south-east suburb.
