Former Bengal minister asked to depose before Anand Margi panel

Kolkata, June 27 (IANS) CPI-M leader and former West Bengal minister Kanti Ganguly on Monday was directed by the Calcutta High Court to appear before a judicial commission probing the killing of 17 Anand Margis in 1982.

A bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta directed Ganguly to appear before the commission but said he would depose only out of his own volition.

The Mamata Banerjee government in 2012 had constituted the Justice (retd.) Amitava Lala Commission of Inquiry to probe the massacre of 16 monks and a nun belonging to Ananda Marga in the city.

Ganguly subsequently had moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the legality of the setting up of the commission contending the erstwhile Left Front government constituted probe panel was yet to conclude its findings.
