Chinese TV maker Skyworth plans expansion in India

Chennai, June 27 (IANS) Chinese television major Skyworth is planning to set up an assembly line in north India and would launch other consumer durables like air conditioners next year, a top official of its Indian subsidiary said on Monday.

"We are planning to have a plant in north India. We are also looking at acquisitions to expand our presence in India," Jackson Zhang, Managing Director, Skyworth India Electronics Pvt Ltd told reporters here.

He was here to launch the world's slimmest (7.9 mm) high technology television AIR TV, priced at Rs 169,990, in Tamil Nadu.

Presently Skyworth India gets some of its models assembled at its facility in Hyderabad and imports high-end products.

Skyworth is present in India for the past five years and largely focussed on the southern Indian markets.

All these years, the company was focussed on setting up its dealer network.

According to Zhang, the company is also planning to launch other consumer durables like air conditioners, washing machines and refrigerators.

When asked about Skyworth marketing strategy as its 32-inch TVs are priced much lower than the Korean competitors, D. Gurmith Singh, Regional Sales Manager, said: "In some product segments, we are price-point players and in some our prices are comparable with that of the competition."

The Chinese group has set 17 million units -- six million units from overseas market and 11 million from the home market -- as the total TV sales target for 2016-17.
