Beijing, June 24 (IANS) While reiterating that it respects the decision of British citizens on Brexit, China on Friday urged the European Union (EU) and Britain to reach an early agreement on the latter's exit from the regional bloc.
At a press conference here, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said Beijing hoped the two sides would begin talks and reach an agreement on the terms of Britain's exit, EFE news reported.
The spokesperson added that China "respects" the referendum result as well as the decision of Prime Minister David Cameron to step down.
However, Hua did not clarify if China will continue its important financial cooperation programmes, based on Britain's being an EU member, in the future.
She said Beijing will carry on cooperation with Britain as well as the EU and asserted that a strong and stable Europe was in the interest of China.
