May air passenger traffic up 22 percent, says DGCA

New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Domestic air passenger traffic rose 21.63 per cent in April to 86.69 lakh from 71.27 lakh registered during the corresponding month of last year, official data showed on Monday.

During April, the air passenger traffic had surged by 20.93 per cent to 79.32 lakh.

Data furnished by aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) showed that the passenger traffic during the January-May period grew by 22.87 percent.

 

"Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-May 2016 were 396.04 lakh as against 322.32 lakh during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering a growth of 22.87 per cent," the DGCA said in its monthly statistical analysis.

The data showed that low-cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet had the highest passenger load factor (PLF) during the month under review at 93.5 percent.

This is the 13th successive month when the budget airline clocked over 90 per cent PLF. The LCC was followed by budget passenger carriers -- GoAir (88.6) and IndiGo (87.2).

Further, the data on the on-time performance showed Vistara leading the industry with 85.1 per cent punctuality rate at four major airports of Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

It was followed by IndiGo (83.1), Jet Airways and JetLite (82.3), SpiceJet (79.2), and Air India's domestic operations (74.3) being on schedule.

Meanwhile, Air Pegasus had the highest number of cancellations at 21.34 percent followed by Air Costa (4.16), Trujet (2.71), AirAsia India (1.14) and JetLite (0.55).

"The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of May 2016 has been 0.55 per cent," the aviation regulator said.

According to the data, a total of 782 passenger related complaints had been received last month.

The IndiGo achieved the highest market share in the month under review at 38.5 percent followed by Jet Airways (16.1), Air India (15.6), SpiceJet (12.6), GoAir (8.1) and JetLite (2.9 percent).

Vistara reported a market share of 2.5 percent, followed by AirAsia India (2.2), Air Costa (0.7), Trujet (0.5) and Air Pegasus (0.2).
