Gujarat HC notice to CIC, Kejriwal in Modi degree row

Ahmedabad, June 20 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court on Monday issued notice to the Chief Information Commissioner following a petition filed by the Gujarat University in connection with the controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualifications.

Justice S.H. Vora issued the notice to the CIC and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the petition which has challenged the CIC's authority to ask the university to divulge information regarding the post-graduate degree of Modi obtained from the university in 1983.

The petition has contended that the CIC had exceeded its brief by directing the university to disclose the details of Modi's qualifications to a third person - Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The CIC had on April 29 directed the Gujarat and Delhi Universities to disclose details of Moda's graduate and post graduate details respectively to Kejriwal, who had written to the CIC. The petition comes after the University had on May 1 shared the marksheet of Modi claiming that he had scored 499 out of 800 marks or 62.3 per cent in MA as an external student of the university in 1983.

The university had earlier resisted divulging information of Modi's degree to Kejriwal under the Right To Information Act, after which he had approached the CIC.
