Chennai, June 17 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday congratulated Hillary Clinton on clinching the nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate for the US presidential elections.
In a letter to Clinton, text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa said: "Kindly accept my heartiest congratulations on clinching the nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate for the election of the President of the United States of America."
"It is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction for all the women in the world and in particular, women in democratic electoral politics that you have become the first woman to be a candidate of one of the two major political parties in the United States for the Presidency," Jayalalithaa added.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said Clinton has given voice and hope to the cause of women empowerment across the world.
Recalling Clinton's visit to Chennai in 2011 as Secretary of State, Jayalalithaa said she has fond memories of that visit and the warm and cordial interactions they had on a range of issues of mutual interest.
"My best wishes are with you for the further stages of the campaign and for the Presidential Election in November this year. I have no doubt that as your political career peaks, you will continue to be a role model for women across the world," Jayalalithaa said.
