Tennis: Edmund upsets Simon at Queen's Club

London, June 15 (IANS) British wild card Kyle Edmund pulled off an upset, defeating eighth-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the Aegon Championships, a key Wimbledon tune-up tennis event here on Wednesday.

After little separated the two players over the first two sets of a first-round match that had been delayed by rain, the 21-year-old Edmund completely dominated the second-serve points in the decider, reports Efe.

Edmund won eight of the nine points on his second serve, while Simon won just two of the 11 points in the third set when he missed his first delivery.

In the final set, Simon put just 47 per cent of his first serves in play and committed three double faults.

Next up for Edmund in the second round of Queen' Club will be Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, who defeated another British wild card, Daniel Evans, 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.

In one other completed match thus far on Wednesday, third-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic rallied to edge Australia's Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.

Queen's Club is an important tune-up event for Wimbledon, tennis' grasscourt Grand Slam, which gets under way here on June 27.
