Ho Chi Minh City, June 14 (IANS) Fencer Do Thi Anh has become Vietnam's 20th athlete to qualify for the upcoming Rio Olympics, local media reported Tuesday.
Anh, who was ranked fourth in the recent Asia/Oceania zonal Olympic qualifying tournament in China, was pushed up to third in the foil category to be granted the Olympic berth, daily newspaper Vietnam News reported.
The International Fencing Federation informed Vietnam that Anh got the ticket after Yuan Ping of New Zealand, who finished second in the foil category, was ruled ineligible for the Olympics as the former Commonwealth champion previously competed under China jersey, reports Xinhua.
So far, Vietnam has secured 20 Olympian tickets in fencing, weightlifting, badminton, wrestling, shooting, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, rowing and judo.
Local sports officials were waiting for more qualifiers in athletics and swimming.
Without winning any gold medals in past Olympic Games, Vietnam has brought home a total of two silvers in taekwondo from Sydney 2000 and in weightlifting from Beijing 2008.
