Kabul, June 11 (IANS) A blind police officer was on Saturday appointed the district police chief in the restive Uruzgan province of Afghanistan, local media reported.
The move by the Ministry of Interior was described as unprecedented. Local officials said the appointment of commander Shah Mahmood was due to his 14 years' experience with the Afghan National Police forces, Khaama Press reported.
Mahmood assumed charge as the district police chief of Dehrawood district. He has previously served as the security chief of Tarinkot city, the provincial capital of the province.
Mahmood is said to be an arch foe of the Taliban group and reportedly lost his eyes due to a bomb explosion by the Taliban militants.
