Bochum (Germany), June 9 (IANS) Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen's former coach Sascha Lewandowski passed away on Thursday.
The district attorney and police confirmed here on Thursday that the 44-year-old had been found dead in his apartment. Details about the cause of death are not yet known, a German Football Association statement said.
Lewandowski was head coach at Bayer Leverkusen alongside Sami Hyypia from April 2012 until summer 2013. After Hyypias dismissal in April 2014, he again took over the reins of the Bundesliga side.
He left his most recent role as head coach of second-division side Union Berlin in March 2016 due to health issues. He was on medical advice because of acute fatigue syndrome.
"We are very shocked and upset," Reinhard Grindel, German football association's president said in the statement on the death of the manager.
"Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the family and friends of Sascha Lewandowski."
