New Delhi, June 7 (IANS) BJP MP Vijay Goel on Tuesday demanded an eligibility test for admission to undergraduate courses in all colleges affiliated to the Delhi University to ensure that only meritorious students got in.
The Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan said 85 per cent seats in the DU colleges, directly funded by the Delhi government, should go to Delhi students.
"To redress widespread cheating in board examinations across Bihar and other states to get admissions in the Delhi University, there should be an eligibility test across DU colleges so that students like Rubi Rai and Sourav Shreshtha can be kept out," Goel told media persons here.
After questions were raised in the media, a re-test was conducted by the Bihar School Education Board for Arts topper Rubi Rai and Science topper Saurabh Sreshtha -- while Sreshtha failed in the re-test, Rai cried off saying she was unwell. A case has since been registered against these students.
Goel said he also met Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi and demanded strict action against students who resort to malpractices like cheating, presenting fake marksheets and other wrongdoings to gain admissions in the university.
"Tyagi was open for a debate in this matter," the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said.
He said various state education boards with separate courses and examination systems cannot be equated with the Central Board of Secondary Education.
"Some boards have liberal marking of answersheets whereas others have tight marking. So, the DU's cutoff list too is of no use," Goel said.
He clarified that even if a student was born in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh, he will be considerred a Delhi student if (s)he appears in Class 12 board exams in the national capital.
Goel also demanded the Delhi Government open new universities and colleges here to meet the educational needs of Delhi's students and urged for introduction of evening colleges in all 18 colleges under the Delhi government.
He said a delegation will meet Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia soon in this regard.
